The
2005 Annual Meeting of the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral
Education, hosted by The University of Alabama School of Social
Work, will be held at the Bryant Conference Center on the UA Campus,
on Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17, 2005. The
theme will focus on the role of doctoral education in social work
in addressing social disparities, including health disparities
as well as disparities in economic status, access to education,
access to social services, and other areas affecting human well-being.

Registration
Based on facilities and food costs, the price of conference registration
will be $225.00/person. The price includes continental breakfast
and lunch on both Friday and Saturday, refreshment breaks, instruction
and program materials. It also includes shuttle service to and from
the Birmingham Airport. Participants who register less than five
working days before the meeting should do so by phone to insure
confirmation for their registration. A SEPARATE FORM IS
REQUIRED FOR EACH PERSON PLANNING TO ATTEND. In order to
plan for food and facilities, we must receive your registration
form by September 13, 2005.
Schedule
Registration will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday, and
from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The conference will run from
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
on Saturday.

Tax Deduction
Treasury regulations may permit an income tax deduction for educational
expenses (registration fees, travel, meals and lodging) undertaken
to maintain or improve professional skills.

Location and Lodging
Four
Points
Hotel accommodations have been made at the Four Points Hotel by
Sheraton located on The University of Alabama Campus and adjacent
to the Bryant Conference Center. The hotel address is 320 Paul W.
Bryant Drive. A special rate of $79 + 11% tax (single or double)/night
has been negotiated for the conference for reservations received
by August 16, 2005. Call the 1-888-627-7070 to make a reservation.
It is important that you mention that you are with the GADE
Conference when making reservations.
After registering for the conference, you will receive a map with
the locations and phone numbers of alternative lodging suggestions.

Area Attractions
Birmingham
Civil Rights Institute
You are
encouraged to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute during
your visit to Alabama. The institute is located in the Civil Rights
District of Birmingham, across the street from Kelly Ingram Park
and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Persons arriving at Birmingham
International Airport can visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
if their flight arrives before 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 15,
or departs after 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 18 (see Transportation,
below). The Institute is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through
Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. It is closed on
Mondays. Admission is $9.

Transportation and Shuttle Service |

The
University of Alabama is committed to complying with the Americans
with Disabilities Act. All conference facilities, including the
shuttle service from the airport to the hotel, are accessible. To
insure that appropriate accomodations are made, please make your
request for accommodations on the registration form or by emailing
your request to the Conference organizer at least 30
calendar days prior to the program date.
Eight
major airlines serve the Birmingham International Airport (BHM),
which is about 60 miles or an hour’s drive from Tuscaloosa.
Your conference registration includes transportation from the airport
to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, September 15, and
return to the airport on Saturday night, September 17 or Sunday,
September 18. Please be sure to indicate your airline, flight numbers,
and arrival and departure times on the registration form. Pick up
will be at the outside baggage claim area on the terminal sidewalk
in front of the building. Signage will be on the window of the University
of Alabama vans.
Participants arriving before 3 p.m. Thursday and departing after
4 p.m. Sunday will have the option of visiting the Birmingham
Civil Rights Institute. There is an admission charge
of $9, $5 for senior citizens. Hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.,
Tuesday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Tuscaloosa is also served by the Crescent, Amtrak’s train
that runs from New Orleans to New Your City via Atlanta, Charlotte,
Washington, and Philadelphia. Complimentary shuttle service will
be provided by the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton for hotel guests
arriving at or departing from the Tuscaloosa Amtrak Station. Please
include arrival/departure times with your registration form and

If
you drive, parking at the Four Points Hotel is free. Tuscaloosa
is located on Interstate 20 and 59, about an hour west of Birmingham.

Cancellations and Refunds
If you must cancel, a full refund may be granted up to 10 working
days prior to the conference. Thereafter, an administrative fee
(equal to 25% of the registration fee) will be charged against your
refund. Refunds cannot be made on the day the program begins, but
a substitute participant may be designated.
The University of Alabama reserves the right to cancel, postpone
or combine class sections: to limit registration; or to change instructors.
Any money-back guarantee offered on specific programs does not necessarily
apply to other programs of The University of Alabama College of
Continuing Studies.
